Repost for the daytime crowd: My most recent project (the last day or three) is getting my nearly 20 year old HPI Nitro RS4 2 running. Sunday I took it apart, cleaned it, re-assembled, reset the carb and then my excitement died. I have no fuel! The only hobby shop that was open was out out fuel so I ordered some and forgot about it.
Eat dicks kinja
I told my dad what I was doing (we both used to race nitro R/Cs forever ago) and he said that there was still a half can or so of traxxas fuel laying around as well as a couple of lexan bodies! We both had a chuckle about the fuel as it is at least 15 years old and has been opened, but I said “worth a shot”. That was earlier this evening. I got home gassed it up and looked for my glow plug ignitor...
Shut up kinja
C batteries!!!! What the fuck takes a C battery! I immediately thought about 3d printing a AA battery to C battery adapter, but that takes too long. So using some sticky tack and some alligator clips I
actually
slapped this together:
Yo this is dumb
Anyway, It fired up first pull!! I let it scream down the street at almost 10 pm and then shut it off. The carb is STIFF, it needs a little TLC but I think I will have a solid driver in the near future!
I will do whatever I want and post any pictures I want, you will not stop me
Nighty Night

Article content: good stuff, sound like fun was had.
Photo cred comments: some of the funniest stuff I have read in a while. Yes that means I’m 50 going on 12, but I don’t care.

Fun fact: My dad had Antera three-spokes that looked just like that, on his red S2000 AP1 for a while

Man that takes me back. I just dipped my toe back into the RC hobby, but on the electric side. They don’t even sell new nitro cars anymore at my hobby shop, and I sold all my nitro stuff off 15 years ago for gas money to get through student teaching.

I’m definitely looking to get an electric I just can’t decide. Car or truck. I actually have another RS42 and an original T-Maxx. The T-Maxx was always a problem though so I don’t know if I’ll mess with it.

Used to have an E-Maxx! I just remember all the plastic chassis bits breaking constantly.

OMFG replaced that front bulkhead 3-4 times and broke an A arm every other time I ran it. Started replacing with SUPER expensive metal parts only to break the harder to get to plastic bits they were bolted to!

I had an Impreza Super Nitro RS4 rally that was pretty hopped up. My first hobby grade RC car was an Associated RC10 with the anodized gold chassis, I wish I still had that one!
I don’t have anything now, but I should. It’s a fun little hobby.

This is awesome. Ever now and again I see my RC10 Team Factory truck on the shelf in the garage and consider getting it going.y fuel is probably 20 years old...lol.
A couple years back I did something similar and wanted to get my truck going, dug around for radio batteries, receiver batteries, glow starter battery....what a pain but damn it’s good to hear that 2-cyxle rev and scream down the street.
The main reason nitro goes bad is the alcohol absorbs moisture and also evaporates.
What radio kit are you running?

Wow that takes me back. I'm tempted to dip my toe back into that lately.

I always used the trucks more than the cars. I’m just a backyard basher at heart. My wife bought me a La Trax (entry level Traxxas, I didn’t even know they existed) 1:18 scale truck for my birthday. It’s been a fun little thing to beat up on. I had to upgrade to a sealed bearing kit, because I sized a bearing within a week :)
I'd really like to get an E-Revo VXL, but I'm also too cheap to buy it.

I had an E-Maxx that I put spools in to lock the front and rear diffs. I had so much fun with that thing!
I broke a lot of axles though!

$600 is a lot but that is prob exactly what I ought to get being that it’s a low off roader. They’re tough to come by, sold out most places. They’re available on Ebay, but at a $20-60 premium

Doesn’t matter, I’m too cheap right now to buy it anyways. I bought an entire modern fuel injected 170cc scooter for $600.

I’ve been debating getting my old Nitro TC3 running again. It needs a fair amount of work, wheels, tires, probably a body, and I had a piece of sand get stuck in the glow head and stripped the entire thing out. Probably fuel lines and a tank, too. Trinity made a replacement glow head, but I have looked on and off for years and never found it. I’ve contemplated getting one machined, too (it wouldn’t be hard, just a disc with a raised threaded area for the plug).
I really don’t want to give up on a good, lower end but race-quality engine to spend like $150 on a legacy OS starter engine that used to be like $65 a decade ago.

Yep, started looking at “swap” engines for the RS4 2 and then decided that I would just go for a new electric and use the RS4 as is.

Yeah, sadly at this point a nitro car in need of an engine probably doesn’t make financial sense to get back on the road.

And, like, the NTC3 was so cool!!! Had a disc brake, two speeds, front/rear/center LSD’s, and a bunch of other stuff that you just will never ever see in an electric that’s not going for land speed records.

Drive carefully. The spare parts could be hard to find.
I still own distantly related version of that. M ine is the one with Gallardo body. It might still be in somewhat running condition but I’m out of fuel too. Nitro fuel i s currently slightly difficult to source as most local hobby shops have s topp ed selling it due stric ter safety regulations.

I actually have two RS2s. One has a beat pullsart but otherwise they’re both all hopped up with aluminum parts (ones got a second gear!). So I have most of the factory parts as well. Another Oppo put me on to an online shop that sells most of the parts, definitely the things you’ll need like clutch shoes. There are also a couple of newer engines that can be had on eBay for $100 give or take.
I will probably just work with what I’ve got though. That old fuel is working fine! Just a few minutes I took it out and tuned the carb in soooo nice. Then I smoked through two tanks without issue.
Finally I did ring up a LaTrax Teton, for some entry level electric truck fun
